Good Morning Everyone!
Have you ever wondered why March was designated as being Women’s History Month?
Let’s start by recognizing that reaching this pinnacle of an ENTIRE month dedicated to Women’s history was a step-by-step process. It went from a day being dedicated to women- to a week, and finally a month (deservingly so).
The first Women’s History Day was officially declared and celebrated on February 28, 1909 in New York. This was specifically for those women who worked in garment factories and took part in strikes in 1908 promoting economic rights of women. The strike in 1908 was in honor of a march in 1857 where garment employees went on strike to get their share of rights.
As this amazing movement was taking place women in the United States were focused in on another issue. They were shocked to find out that school history books completely disregarded achievements of women in America. The domino effect of this was visible in the 1970’s when a courageous group in California made it their goal to change the school curriculum in order to reflect the immense and important changes women made historically. This group was on the path to establishing a “Women’s History Week.” They wanted to see this come to life in 1978.
“Women’s History Week” took society by storm and President Jimmy Carter officially announced Women’s History Week for March 2-8, 1980.
NOPE – that was not enough. Just a week? – The Women’s National History Project wanted more time dedicated towards Women’s history and in 1987 Congress officially declared Women’s History Month.
Acknowledging the series of events that took place before March became the representation of Women’s History Month is so vital in understanding the significance of this month. Each year there is a theme dedicated towards Women’s History Month – the theme for March 2018 is “Nevertheless, She Persisted.”
