Last week, on International Women’s Day approximately five million workers gathered together on the streets of Spain to create spark around perhaps what has come to become an area of concern, the rights of women. This strike was supported by powerful female leaders in Spain and consisted of two hour walkout’s.
The purpose of the strike? People wanted to declare how tired they have become of the machista culture.
Startling statistics emphasize the importance of this movement, now, more than ever before:
1. Last year: 49 women were killed at the hands of their partner or ex-partner.
2. Violent abuse is on the rise with an estimated 142,893 cases in 2016.
3. The gender pay gap continues to exist with women getting paid 12.7 percent less than their male counterparts despite the same education/skills.
The global stance being taken against the dacrmination and abuse women face is stronger than ever. Although there is a lot of work to be done – the fact that 5.3 million worker’s were on the streets on the day of International Women’s Day is major progress in the right direction.
Let’s continue to strive to bring the importance of gender to the forefront. This shouldn’t be a one day discussion, rather, it should a daily discussion.
This quote by Steve Jobs truly defines me. Life is beautiful, and if you are passionate about something...pursue it. My passion is to help and empower women around the world. Through this blog I hope to inspire everyone to run after their passion, because this is what life is about.
There is inspiration everywhere I look. One day while I was in India I saw this young girl holding her brother in her arms going to every car asking for money. After this she went back to the sidewalk, and as I passed by her I saw innocence and helplessness in her eyes. It was as if she was asking me to help her get a better life. There is a lot we can do to create a change in this world, and I have committed myself to doing exactly that.
Everyday is truly a new opportunity to learn something you never knew before, so let's go on this journey together.
